Friday Email for January 29, 2016

Hi All –
Happy Friday!  Oh, how nice it is to look out my window and see sunshine and know that there is no bad weather in the forecast!  What a week it’s been!  I hope you weathered the storm okay and have had a good week in spite of it!

Here’s what’s happening this weekend at church:

Tonight at 6:30 the Classic Christians (age 50 and over) will gather in Weldin Hall for their January meeting.  The night begins with a potluck dinner (bring a dish to share) and then continues on with a DVD about Elk Creek history.  We’ll also be going over plans for upcoming trips, especially the big trip to Nashville in April!

Tomorrow morning, at 8 a.m., the members of our Administrative Council will gather in Weldin Hall for their 2016 Planning Retreat.  This is always an exciting meeting where we dream and vision and seek God’s will for our church for this coming year.  Please pray for the Council tomorrow as they gather and work together!

On Sunday morning, our normal schedule resumes.  It seems like forever since we’ve been together, and especially so for those of us who were on the Women’s Retreat – it’s been two weeks!  So I’m looking forward to being with all of you on Sunday for our worship services and other activities.  I’ll finish up the “Uncluttered” sermon series, by having us look at emotional uncluttering, and we’ll be blessed by great music from the Chancel Choir, Children’s Choir and Handbell Choir.  What a morning it will be!  Sunday School and Youth Group also come back together this Sunday!

Tickets for the Joy of Faith dinner will be on sale in the hospitality area all morning on Sunday.  The dinner is Saturday, February 6th at 5:30 p.m. in the cafeteria of Elkton High School.  Cost is $10/adults, $5/children 10 and under, and $30 max/family of six.  Following dinner, we’ll move to the Auditorium for the main event – a performance by Christian Illusionist Brett Myers!  Please make a special effort to invite your family, friends and neighbors to come along with you – it’s going to be a wonderful evening as Brett helps us remember in creative ways that faith is believing in things you cannot see!

Just a reminder that we’ll be sending out the next College Care Package right around Valentine’s Day, so if you’d like to help fill them, bring your donations of goodies to the box near the Welcome Center.

If you’re interested in becoming a member of our church, you’re invited to take part in the next New Member Orientation Class which will be held on Sunday, February 7th at 12:15 p.m. in Weldin Hall.  Lunch is included and childcare is available, if needed.  To sign up for the class, please email or call the church office at 410-398-0933.

Our next week to sponsor the Rotating Homeless Shelter is just around the corner (the week of February 22nd).  There are many opportunities for you to help.  See the poster on the Missions bulletin board or go to our church website ( to sign up.

In just a couple of days, we’ll be moving into the month of February and the church calendar is chocked full of activities that month.  The February newsletter is already on the church website ( but hard copies will also be available on Sunday morning on the table across from the Welcome Center.

I think that’s it for now.  Have a great Friday, and an even greater weekend!  Carve out some time for rest and relaxation for yourself, even while you tackle your chore list.  Spend time with those you love, and then I’ll see you in worship on Sunday!  Can’t wait!

                                                                                                                Grace and Peace,

Friday Email

Hi All –
Happy Friday!  Oh, what a difference a week makes!  Last Friday, I was packing up and getting ready to head off for a fabulous Women’s Retreat in Ocean City.  This Friday, I’m getting ready to hunker down at home like everybody else to face who knows what?  I wish I could tell you what Sunday morning will bring, but it’s hard to tell at this point, so stay tuned to your computer.  If we make a decision to not have worship on Sunday morning (which frankly, is highly likely, and a certainty if we’re still under a State of Emergency), then I’ll post something on both Facebook and our church website.  Since I won’t be at the church, I won’t be able to change the church answering machine, but people can certainly call me at the parsonage (410-398-4440).  So . . . stay tuned!
In the event we do have worship, I’ll be offering the second in my “Uncluttered” sermon series, this week focusing on uncluttering our lives of emotional baggage – anger, bitterness, unforgiveness and the like.  We’ll have the joy of hearing our children’s choir sing at 8:30, as well as Steve Gilmore, and then we’ll hear Steve and the Chancel Choir sing at 11:00.

 Other notes about Sunday:
We’re still collecting donations for the College Care Packages that will go out around Valentine’s Day.  A collection bin is in the Welcome Center area.

Tickets will be on sale Sunday for the Joy of Faith dinner, which will take place on Saturday, February 6th at 5:30 p.m. in the cafeteria at Elkton High School.  Prices are $10/adults, $5 children 10 and under, and $30 max/family of six.  At 7 p.m. Christian illusionist Brett Myers will entertain us – so start inviting your family and friends to join you now.  It’s going to be a great Joy of Faith weekend!  (Sign-ups for the prayer breakfasts will be coming soon as well.)
The Classic Christians will be traveling to Nashville on their annual spring bus trip in                            April.  The brochures are ready and on the table across from the Welcome Center.  If                            you’re interested, grab one soon, since last year’s bus trip sold out.

A couple of other things:
Our “Methodists in Motion” challenge is still going strong and this weekend will provide a lot of activity hours via snow shoveling and sledding!  We’ve made it to 75% of our goal!!  Since we started this physical challenge, participants have logged in 4749 hours in motion, which translates to 14, 724 miles!  The goal is 6300 hours – so we’re getting ever closer.  Keep track of your movement time and send it in to or text it to 443-350-4515.

Our denomination’s General Conference is coming up this spring.  This event takes place once every four years, and during it changes are made to our book of guiding principles and rules, The Book of Discipline.  So prior to General Conference, each Annual Conference has been assigned a specific day to pray for this important event in the life of our church.  Our Conference’s – the Peninsula-DE Conference – Day is Wednesday, January 27th, so please next Wednesday, lift a prayer for our United Methodist Church that we will seek and follow God’s will.

I think that’s it for now.  I’m so sad that the Men’s Retreat that was to take place in Ocean City this weekend had to be cancelled.  If they had had one fourth the fun and fellowship we women had, it would have been great!

Have a great Friday, and a wonderful weekend.  If it turns out that we’re inundated with snow, make the best of it.   Enjoy the time inside your warm and toasty home with those you love.  Play games, talk with each other, watch movies, do some uncluttering (LOL)!  Anyway, just make it as good a weekend as possible, and God willing, I’ll see you in worship Sunday morning!  If not, I’ll see you when it’s safe for us to gather together again!  Peace be with you all!
                                                                                                                Grace and Peace,

Friday Email

Hi All –

Happy Friday!  Hope you’ve had a good week and a good start to this new year!  It’s kind of tough to get back into a routine after weeks of holiday preparation and celebration, but I hope your week has gone smoothly!

   Here’s what’s happening this weekend:

-          Today 18 of our youth with 5 adult leaders are heading off to Ocean City for the Peninsula-DE Conference Youth Rally.  It’s always an exciting event with thousands of young people in attendance, wonderful programs and speakers, and uplifting music and worship.  Please pray for all who are attending that God might move in a mighty way in their lives this weekend, and that He will grant them traveling mercies as well.

-          On Sunday, I’ll start a new sermon series entitled “Uncluttered” and this week, we’ll think about all the “stuff” in our lives.  We’ll welcome the choir back at 11:00 as well (after their well-deserved week off).
-          Not too long from now (February 6 & &) we’ll be celebrating our annual Joy of Faith weekend.  This year we’ll be entertained by Christian illusionist Brett Myers.  The Saturday night program will, as usual, be held at Elkton High School and will be preceded by our annual fabulous dinner created by Gerry and Jaime Treese.  Tickets will be on sale for the dinner in the hospitality area starting this Sunday morning.  Get your tickets early because the dinner usually sells out!  Prices are $10/adults, $5/children 10 and under, and $30 max for a family of six.

-          The College Care Package collection box is up in the Welcome Center area to receive your donations of goodies for the next care package which will go out to our students around Valentine’s Day.
-          I received word yesterday that the Rotating Homeless Shelter needs help this coming week.  No church has responsibility for the week, so the coordinators are trying to patch things together from all of the churches in the area.  We would like to take responsibility for one night – Thursday, January 14th – and are in need of the following people to help – intake workers, evening hosts/hostesses, and overnighters.  If you can be one of these persons, please email Susan Starrett as soon as possible at

-          Finally, a reminder that we’re posting videos of our Sunday worship services on-line.  We just started this a few weeks ago and already over a hundred people have watched them!
So if you have to miss worship because you’re sick or traveling, you can catch most of it via video!  Simply go to our church website,, click on “sermons” and there you’ll find the link to the You Tube channel.

I think that’s it for now!  Hope you have a great Friday, and an even greater weekend!  Part of my weekend is going to be de-decorating from Christmas.  I always leave my tree and all of my decorations up for the full twelve days of Christmas, but this year, I’ve gone a little bit past that – so tomorrow it is!  Ugh!  It’s much more fun to decorate than de-decorate!

Anyway, have a great weekend!  Find some time to rest and relax even while tackling your “to-do” list, spend time with those you love, and then I’ll see you in worship on Sunday morning!
                                                                                                        Grace and Peace,
